Meet the Staff

Dentistry

James R. Seligman, D.M.D.

Dr. Seligman has his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston and his BS degree from the University of Massachusetts. He has been practicing dentistry since 1985.

Dr. Seligman had a private practice in Brookline for nearly 19 years, where he remained very active in the community. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Brookline (past president), and the Brookline Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the board of the Brookline Arts Center, the Friends of Brookline Public Health, and the Metropolitan District Dental Society. Other activities have included hosting Boston Access Television, “Oral Health Update” on the Answer Channel.

Dr. Seligman is now focusing on Boston’s South End where he moved his practice in November 2007. Not only is he excited about bringing his team and his expertise to the neighborhood, he looks forward to his involvement in various activities in support of the community and the SpeakEasy Stage Company. He is also a resident of the South End.

Dr Seligman is a constant student and regularly takes continuing education. He regularly studies at the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Key Biscayne, FL and works closely with the Pride Institute of CA. He is a member of the American Association of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Recently, he has received a faculty appointment at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

Periodontist

Valerie Smith, D.M.D.

Dr. Valerie Smith has been practicing periodontics since 2000. Originally from Philadelphia, she earned her BA in Psychology from Temple University. She then relocated to Boston to attend Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine earning her DMD degree in 1997. From there she attended the Medical College of Virginia where she earned her Certificate in Periodontics in 2000. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Smith started her own periodontal practice in Northern Virginia outside Washington DC in 2001.  After practicing there for 8 years, she decided to move back to Boston. It was a great move and she now resides in downtown Boston.

Dr. Smith is active in several dental societies, including the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society and the Massachusetts Periodontal Society.  

Besides having a passion for the field and practice of periodontology, Dr. Smith is also current in the practice of dental implant placement and bone augmentation procedures.

When she is not helping patients, she enjoys travelling, gardening and home improvement.

Dental Hygiene

Dianne – R.D.H.

Dianne, a registered dental hygienist (R.D.H.), graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1988 with a degree in Hygiene and began practicing at an office in Hartford, CT. Dianne earned her Bachelors Degree in Psychol­ogy at Northeastern University in Boston in 1996 while doing hygiene part-time. Dianne went on to obtain her Masters of Science in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Rhode Island in 1998.

Dianne’s passion has always been dental hygiene and she decided to devote her energies to this career. In 1998 she began working for Dr. James Seligman where she was able to share her commitment to ex­cellence in caring for her patients. Eleven years later, the philosophy of patient-centered, comprehensive care still exists.

Ann – R.D.H.

Ann, a registered dental hygienist (R.D.H.), graduated from Forsyth School for Hygienists in 1996. She sub­sequently earned her Bachelors degree in Dental Hygiene from Northeastern University in 1997. Since Ann’s graduation, she has worked as a dental hygienist at a dental school in Boston. She has also maintained one day a week working in a private practice. Ann joined Dr. Seligman‘s prac­tice in December, 2004. She enjoys the team effort that everyone puts forth. Most important, she appreciates that everyone strives to maintain the office philosophy of providing a high standard of quality care for all our patients.

Dental Assisting

Kerri – C.D.A.

Kerri graduated from SUNY at Geneseo in New York in May 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. Kerri conducted clinical dental research for 2 years at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. She also earned her Radiology Certification in 2008 from Boston University. Kerri joined Dr. Seligman's practice in April 2009 as the offices' dental assistant. She commits herself to the highest standards of individualized oral health care while creating a pleasant environment for every patient.

Office Administration

Heather – Financial Administrator

Heather graduated from Boston School of Nursing and went on to offer more than two decades of service in dentistry. Heather took time to raise her two sons and to partner with her husband to launch a successful architectural design business. In 1995, joined the team at Seligman Dental Designs, where she now focuses on financial and organi­zational administration of the business office. She is dedicated to helping patients achieve their goal of a healthy, beautiful smile through creative financing. And, she is terrific at providing gentle encouragement throughout the course of patient treatment and care.

Michelle – Patient Coordinator

Michelle is our patient coordinator and dental assistant. She graduated from Bryman Insti­tute in 1995 with a certificate in Dental Assisting. Upon completion of this program, Michelle went on to receive her Radiology Certificate from Tufts. Michelle joined Dr. Seligman’s team as a dental assistant in September of 1995. She continues to work at Seligman Dental Designs as patient coordinator, and assures that we provide a high level of patient care. She is presently studying to become a certified dental assistant to be able to perform extended duties.
